As someone who went through the exact same portion of life as Lady Bird not too long ago, this movie touched me deeply. It was all coming back to me. The school, the friends, the family, the messed-up relationships, the boys, the choices, the first-times, the conflict. We were all Lady Bird once in our lives, stubborn and desperate to make a statement. But deep down inside we were just as confused and vulnerable. What struck me the most is the very end of the movie when she realizes that all the tension that she had with her mom was the result of how much she loves her and all she ever wants is for her to be happy. She also found out that she had to stay true to herself and step out of a toxic relationship. In terms of cinematography, the color of the movie is warm but quite muted, especially the inside of her house. It depicts her feeling of NOT feeling home when she’s home. After she got into college in New York, the color turns brighter, as it was no longer a dream-like reality anymore. But she also came to realize that she now doesn’t have her family or friends where she’s grown her whole life and she only has herself to support her. All her effort was to step out of her comfort zone, the small town in mid-west Cali, and away from the family that she thinks no one understands her, only to find out that she’s still the same girl. Just like what her mother said, “the best version of yourself that you can be”. You don’t have to become a different person to be a better person. Sometimes you lose yourself before you find yourself. The message was strong, delivered by a surprisingly simple storyline. I guess the most fundamental problem is sometimes the simplest. As a coming of age film, that’s what it’s all about, of course: letting people take a look back to see how similar or different their upbringings and life events were and how different you come out in the end.
